Concrete Steps Repair in Toronto

Broken step edges, cracked treads, and sinking front stairs aren't just ugly — they're the most common trip hazard on a Toronto house, and they get more expensive every winter they're ignored. We repair concrete steps and landings across Toronto and the east GTA, and we tell you honestly when replacement beats repair.

Damaged concrete steps

Steps concentrate damage: every footfall lands on the same few inches of nosing, meltwater sits on the treads, and de-icing salt attacks the surface all winter. The result is the familiar Toronto front-step look — crumbling edges, exposed aggregate, treads worn hollow in the middle. All of it is repairable when the structure underneath is sound.

Cracked and broken step edges

Edge repair done right means cutting back to sound concrete, mechanical prep, a bonding layer, and rebuilding the nosing with material that can take impact — then curing it properly. Done wrong, it means a mortar patch that de-bonds by the first spring. If you've had step edges 'fixed' twice already, prep is the reason the fixes didn't hold.

Uneven steps and sinking landings

Risers that started even and aren't anymore mean the stairs or the landing are moving. Sometimes that's repairable — a settled landing can often be corrected — and sometimes it's the first symptom of a base failure that patching can't reach. We diagnose the movement before quoting the fix, because levelling the top of a sinking staircase is a rental, not a repair.

Repair vs. replacement

Repair wins when damage is surface-level and the stairs aren't moving: edges, treads, spalling, cosmetic cracking. Replacement wins when the staircase has structural cracks, ongoing settlement, or so many failed patches that repair means rebuilding it one square foot at a time at repair prices. We quote whichever your steps actually need — and when it's close, we quote both and let you choose with real numbers.

The 3-riser rule: when your steps legally need a handrail

Ontario's building code requires a handrail on exterior steps once they pass the riser threshold — as a working rule, more than three risers means a handrail. A lot of Toronto front stairs are over the line and have either no rail or a loose one anchored in crumbling concrete.

Every step quote we issue includes the code check: your riser count and whether a handrail or guard is required. When new railings are needed, we plan their installation alongside the porch or deck work so you know what a proper one costs. Fixing the steps and leaving a non-compliant rail is half a job.

Your project, step by step

A considered process.

  1. 01

    Photos first

Text photos of the steps for a same-day rough range — most step repairs quote well from photos.

  2. 02

    Diagnosis

Surface damage or structural movement — the quote states which, and why.

  3. 03

    Proper prep

Cut back to sound concrete, mechanical prep, bonding layer. The unskippable part.

  4. 04

    Rebuild & finish

Nosings and treads rebuilt, risers evened, correct slope, clean cure.

  5. 05

    Handrail code check

Riser count vs. code on every quote, with railing installation included in the scope when needed.

Useful answers.

Can broken step edges be repaired, or do the steps need replacing?

Edges and nosings are repairable as long as the staircase itself is sound and not moving. The repair has to be done with real prep — cut back to solid concrete, bonded, cured — or it pops off within a couple of winters. If the stairs are settling or cracked through, we'll tell you repair won't hold and quote the replacement honestly.

Why do concrete steps in Toronto crumble at the edges?

Freeze-thaw plus de-icing salt. Water gets into small surface pores, freezes, and breaks the surface apart from within; salt accelerates it and attacks the surface chemically. Edges and nosings fail first because they take impact loads on top of the weathering.

Do my front steps need a handrail by law?

In Ontario, exterior steps need a handrail once they pass the code's riser threshold — more than three risers as a working rule. Many Toronto front stairs are past it with no compliant rail. Every quote we issue includes your riser count and whether a rail is required. We can include railing installation in the scope.

How fast can I get a price for step repair?

Step repairs are the most photo-quotable work we do. Text us three or four photos — straight on, from the side, and close on the damage — and we can review the likely scope before a site visit.

Can you fix steps that have sunk or tilted?

Sometimes. A settled landing or bottom step can often be corrected. But if the whole staircase is moving because the base under it has failed, re-levelling the surface is temporary by definition. We diagnose the movement first and quote a repair only if it will actually hold.
